Alex Jones

Counsellor / Therapist

Alex grew up in London and has lived and worked in New Zealand since 2008. He is a cis gender man, heterosexual, a father of three boys, and in a mixed cultural relationship (Japanese and Pākehā). Alex has spent time travelling in Europe, South America, and Asia and lived in Japan for a period of time. He has lived in Taranaki since 2016.

Alex is a registered counsellor (NZAC) and during his multi decade career he has had the fortune to work with a variety of presenting problems and with different cultural and identity groups. He has spent many years working closely with kaupapa Māori services and practitioners in Northland and supported young people and individuals withing the queer community throughout his career. Alex has experience working with people with trauma, sexual abuse, violence prevention, relationship problems and abuse, addiction, mental health, and grief. He can work with individuals or couples.

Alex is passionate about inclusivity, working to empower marginalised voices in the community, and is a queer ally. He is always reflective of his own status and cultural assumptions to ensure he advances these values. Alex has a strong passion to ensure that people who come and talk to him feel safe and secure to tell their story and leave feeling empowered to make the changes they are needing. He believes that we as counsellors must listen carefully to those who come to talk and then together find solutions to their problems.

“It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried”. Carl Rogers.
